L-theanine guide
L-theanine for sleep and stress: doses, trials and cost
What trials found for L-theanine and sleep or stress, the 200 to 400 mg doses they used, where the evidence stops, and what 200 mg costs today.
L-theanine is sold for "calm" and "relaxation", often paired with caffeine during the day or melatonin at night. This guide looks only at L-theanine on its own: what the trials measured, what they found, and where the evidence stops.
What is L-theanine?
L-theanine is an amino acid found mainly in tea leaves. Supplements isolate it: capsules on our list hold 100 or 200 mg each. It is not a sleep medicine. People take it hoping to feel less tense.
Does L-theanine help with sleep?
The best-known trial is a 2019 randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover study in Nutrients. Thirty adults without a major psychiatric illness took 200 mg of L-theanine a day for four weeks, and a placebo for another four. Compared with placebo, three parts of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index improved more on L-theanine: time to fall asleep, sleep disturbance and use of sleep medication. The overall sleep score fell from where it started, but the gap versus placebo was not statistically significant.
Keep that in proportion:
- 30 people is a small study.
- Sleep was self-rated on a questionnaire, not measured in a sleep lab.
- The study was funded by an ingredient maker, Taiyo Kagaku, which supplied the tablets. Two co-authors were its employees.
So the result is encouraging but not strong evidence. If you have ongoing trouble sleeping, that is worth raising with a doctor rather than solving with a supplement.
Does L-theanine help with stress?
A 2020 systematic review in Plant Foods for Human Nutrition looked at randomized trials of pure L-theanine supplements for stress and anxiety. The authors concluded that 200 to 400 mg a day may help reduce stress and anxiety in people under stressful conditions. They also said longer and larger trials are needed before it could be justified as a therapy.
In the same 2019 trial, scores on depression and anxiety questionnaires fell from where they started after four weeks on L-theanine. For the depression score, the gap versus placebo was not statistically significant. None of these studies show that L-theanine treats an anxiety disorder or depression. People with those conditions should talk to a doctor.
How much L-theanine did studies use?
| Use studied | Daily dose in trials | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Stress and sleep quality (2019 RCT) | 200 mg | 4 weeks |
| Stress and anxiety (2020 review) | 200–400 mg | Varied by study |
| With caffeine, for alertness and attention (2014 meta-analysis) | Varied by study | Single doses, measured over about 2 hours |
Figures summarized from the studies cited below; individual trials differed.
Our L-theanine list prices every product per 200 mg because that is a common capsule strength and a studied dose. That is a price unit, not advice on how much to take.
What does L-theanine cost per dose?
Plain L-theanine costs little per 200 mg. Today's lowest prices per 200 mg:

Capsules are easiest. Bulk powder usually costs less but needs a milligram scale. For more on picking a bottle, see the cheapest L-theanine.
Is L-theanine safe?
In the 2019 trial, no one dropped out and no adverse events were apparent over four weeks at 200 mg a day. That is one small, short study, so long-term data are limited. Ask a doctor or pharmacist first if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, take any regular medication, or are giving it to a child.
If you combine it with caffeine, the caffeine carries its own limits. See caffeine and L-theanine. If you combine it with melatonin, see how much melatonin.
Frequently asked questions
Does L-theanine make you sleepy?
It is not a sleep medicine. In one 30-person trial, 200 mg a day for four weeks improved some self-rated sleep measures, such as time to fall asleep, compared with placebo.
How much L-theanine should I take for stress?
Trials in a 2020 systematic review used 200 to 400 mg a day. Ask a doctor or pharmacist what is right for you, especially if you take medication.
How long does L-theanine take to work?
The main sleep and stress trial gave it daily for four weeks before measuring. Studies of L-theanine with caffeine measured effects within the first 2 hours after a dose.
Can I take L-theanine every night?
In the 2019 trial, 200 mg a day for four weeks caused no apparent adverse events, but long-term data are limited. Check with a doctor if you plan to take it long-term.
