Cheapest L-theanine: price per 200 mg, powder vs capsules

How to find the cheapest L-theanine by price per 200 mg, why bulk powder costs less than capsules, and what to check on the label before you buy.

· 4 min read · By Value Servings

L-theanine is an amino acid found in tea. Capsules on our list hold 100 or 200 mg each, and bottles range from 30 to 360 capsules. That spread makes shelf prices hard to compare. Our L-theanine list divides each package price by how many 200 mg servings the label states, so a 100 mg capsule and a 200 mg capsule are priced on the same basis.

Why price per 200 mg and not per capsule?

Capsule strength varies. A bottle of 100 mg capsules can look cheap until you notice you need two of them to match one 200 mg capsule. Pricing per 200 mg fixes that.

We picked 200 mg as the unit because it is a common capsule strength and a dose used in studies. A 2019 randomized trial in 30 healthy adults gave 200 mg a day for four weeks. A 2020 systematic review of 9 trials concluded that 200 to 400 mg a day may help with stress in people under stressful conditions, and said larger, longer studies are needed. The unit is for comparing prices, not a recommendation of how much to take.

Is L-theanine powder cheaper than capsules?

Usually, yes. As of the October 20, 2026 price check, the three lowest prices per 200 mg on our list are all bulk powders, and the cheapest capsule costs roughly nine times as much per 200 mg as the cheapest powder. A 100 g bag holds 500 servings of 200 mg, and there is no capsule to pay for. The catch is measuring. 200 mg is a fifth of a gram, far less than a typical scoop, so a kitchen scale will not do. You need a milligram scale, or you are guessing.

Figures are typical ranges, not every product.

If you want capsules, look at 200 mg capsules first. On our list today, every 100 mg capsule costs more per 200 mg than the cheapest 200 mg capsules. Two 100 mg capsules make one 200 mg serving.

What should I check on an L-theanine label?

  • The amount per capsule. The label should say "L-theanine" and give a number in mg. That is what we price.
  • Serving size. Some labels list a two-capsule serving. Check whether the mg figure is per capsule or per serving.
  • Other ingredients. Blends with caffeine, GABA, lemon balm or melatonin are different products. If you only want L-theanine, skip them.
  • Branded ingredients. Some products use a branded form such as Suntheanine or AlphaWave. It is still L-theanine. On our list today, every branded-form product costs more per 200 mg than the cheapest plain capsules.
  • Third-party testing. Momentous says its L-theanine is NSF Certified for Sport. Other brands may carry USP or other marks. See how to tell if a supplement is third-party tested.

Does the brand matter for L-theanine?

For a single, well-defined ingredient, the label amount matters most. Momentous states 200 mg per capsule and 60 servings per container, and says the product is NSF Certified for Sport. As of October 20, 2026 it is the highest price per 200 mg on our list, and the cheapest 200 mg capsules cost about 85% less per 200 mg. That testing is the main reason to pay more. If testing matters to you, for example if you compete in a tested sport, that may be worth the gap. If it does not, a cheaper bottle with a clearly stated 200 mg dose is the value pick.
