Best zinc supplements 2026: price per 15 mg elemental
Zinc glycinate ranked by price per 15 mg of elemental zinc, why the cheapest bottles are 50 mg, the 40 mg upper limit, and when Thorne is worth the price.
Zinc is cheap to make, so most of the price gap between bottles is brand and dose. A big dose per capsule makes the price per milligram look great. Whether that is a bargain depends on how much zinc you actually need.

How these picks are chosen
Our zinc list prices zinc per 15 mg of elemental zinc, from each store's price and its own label. A product goes up only when the store page states the elemental zinc and the count. Glycinate and bisglycinate are on their own tab; other forms (citrate, gluconate, picolinate, oxide) are on a separate tab and are not ranked against glycinate.
- Best value: lowest price per 15 mg today.
- Best softgel / capsule: the cheapest in each form, when the list mixes forms.
- Runner-ups: the next lowest prices.

The dose trap
Price per 15 mg rewards high-dose capsules, because a 50 mg capsule holds more zinc for the money. But more is not better:
| Zinc per day | |
|---|---|
| RDA, adult men | 11 mg |
| RDA, adult women | 8 mg |
| RDA, pregnancy (19+) | 11 mg |
| RDA, breastfeeding (19+) | 12 mg |
| Upper limit, adults | 40 mg |
Figures are from the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements. The upper limit counts zinc from food and supplements together.
A daily 50 mg capsule is above the upper limit on its own. The NIH lists nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, dizziness and headaches among the effects of too much zinc. It also notes that 50 mg a day or more for weeks can interfere with copper absorption, lower copper status and lower HDL cholesterol.
So if the cheapest bottle is 50 mg, it is only a bargain if a doctor has told you to take that much. For most people, a lower-dose bottle (20 to 30 mg per capsule on today's list) is the better buy even at a higher price per milligram. For why high doses upset the stomach, see zinc nausea: why it happens and which zinc to buy.
Which form
- Glycinate / bisglycinate: a common choice for a daily supplement. Many users say it is easier on the stomach, though that is user experience, not a finding from large trials.
- Citrate and gluconate: absorbed about equally well (about 61%) in a small controlled study of 15 adults who took 10 mg without food.
- Oxide: absorbed less well in the same study (about 50%), and a few people absorbed little or none.
- Picolinate: popular, but the NIH fact sheet does not compare it with other forms.
Dose and taking it with food matter more than form for most people. One more absorption note from the NIH: taking 25 mg or more of iron at the same time as zinc can reduce zinc absorption.

The label should state elemental zinc, which is the dose. If you are unsure what a panel means, see how to read a Supplement Facts label.
Who may need a zinc supplement
Most people in the US get enough zinc from food, according to the NIH. Meat, fish and other seafood are the richest sources, and oysters contain more zinc per serving than any other food. Beans, nuts and whole grains also contain zinc, but it is absorbed less well. Groups more likely to run low include:
- Vegetarians and vegans, because phytates in legumes and whole grains reduce zinc absorption
- People with digestive conditions such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis or celiac disease, and people who have had some types of bariatric surgery
- People with alcohol use disorder
- Pregnant and breastfeeding people, who need more
- Older adults, who are more likely to have marginal intakes
Blood tests for zinc have limits. Levels shift with age, sex, time of day and illness, so doctors also look at diet and risk factors. If you take prescription medicines, such as some antibiotics, or are pregnant, ask a doctor or pharmacist before starting zinc.
When Thorne is worth it
Thorne Zinc Bisglycinate is the brand our list compares against. The bottle we track is 30 mg per capsule, 60 capsules, and as of October 15, 2026 it has the highest price per 15 mg on the glycinate list. If you want exactly that product, the price is the price. If you want zinc glycinate at a similar dose, the list shows several 30 mg options that cost less per 15 mg. Check the dose per capsule before you buy.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best form of zinc to take?
A chelated form like zinc glycinate or bisglycinate is a common default. Dose and taking it with food matter more than the form for most people.
Is 50 mg of zinc a day too much?
For long-term daily use, yes, unless a doctor directs it. It is above the 40 mg adult upper limit, and the NIH notes that 50 mg a day or more for weeks can interfere with copper absorption.
Why is my zinc making me nauseous?
Nausea is a known effect of too much zinc. A lower dose taken with a meal is the usual first step.
Should I take zinc every day?
Most people in the US get enough zinc from food. Ask a doctor if you think you are low, especially if you are vegetarian, pregnant, or have a gut condition.
What is the cheapest zinc glycinate per 15 mg?
It changes daily. The picks above are ranked from the latest price check, and the cheapest bottles are often high-dose ones, so check the dose too.
