Best caffeine pills 2026: cheapest per 200 mg
Caffeine pills ranked by price per 200 mg, with the cheapest tablets and capsules, how they compare with Vivarin and coffee, and the FDA's 400 mg daily limit.
Caffeine pills are one of the simplest things to compare. The label states the milligrams per pill, and 200 mg is 200 mg whoever makes it. What differs is the price, the pill size, and whether anything else is mixed in.

How these picks are chosen
Our caffeine list prices tablets and capsules per 200 mg of caffeine, using each store's price and the caffeine on its own label. Gum, energy drinks and pre-workout stay off. Caffeine plus L-theanine combos are on their own tab. Nothing is ranked by commission. See how it works for the full rules.
- Best value: the lowest price per 200 mg today.
- Best capsule or tablet: the cheapest in the other form, when the best value is a tablet or a capsule.
- Biggest sale: a store's own markdown right now.

What to check on the label
- Dose per pill. 200 mg is standard. 100 mg pills, or a scored 200 mg tablet you can split, suit people who get jittery.
- Other ingredients. Some "caffeine" products add green tea extract, B vitamins or other stimulants. That can be fine, but it is not plain caffeine, and the caffeine per pill may not be a round 200 mg. Read the Supplement Facts panel; our guide to reading a Supplement Facts label covers what to look for.
- Anhydrous vs "natural". Caffeine anhydrous is caffeine with the water removed. "Natural caffeine" from tea or coffee beans is the same molecule. 200 mg is 200 mg.
Pills vs coffee
An 8 oz cup of brewed coffee has about 96 mg of caffeine, according to Mayo Clinic's chart, and a large coffee-shop drink can have much more. Pills give an exact dose at a much lower cost per 200 mg. A pill also lands all at once, while a slowly sipped cup spreads the dose out, which some people find gentler. More in caffeine pills vs coffee.
How much caffeine is in what you already drink
| Drink or product | Caffeine (approx.) |
|---|---|
| Brewed coffee, 8 oz | about 96 mg |
| Espresso, 1 oz shot | about 63 mg |
| Brewed black tea, 8 oz | about 48 mg |
| Cola, 8 oz | about 33 mg |
| Energy drink, 16 oz | 54 to 328 mg |
| Caffeine pill | 100 or 200 mg |
Drink figures are typical values from Mayo Clinic and, for energy drinks, the FDA. Brands and brewing vary widely; check labels where they exist.
Count all of it toward your daily total. A 200 mg pill on top of three 8 oz coffees is close to 500 mg.
Timing and splitting
- Take pills with food if they upset your stomach.
- Leave a long gap before bed. In a small 2013 study of 12 adults, 400 mg of caffeine taken 6 hours before bedtime still cut sleep by more than an hour on a home sleep monitor.
- A scored 200 mg tablet splits cleanly into two 100 mg doses. Capsules cannot be split accurately.
- If you use caffeine daily and want to stop, cut back gradually. Withdrawal headaches and tiredness usually start 12 to 24 hours after the last dose and can last 2 to 9 days.
Safe limits
- The FDA cites 400 mg a day as an amount not generally associated with negative effects for most adults. It also notes wide variation in how sensitive people are and how fast they clear caffeine.
- In pregnancy, ACOG says moderate caffeine, under 200 mg a day, does not appear to be a major factor in miscarriage or preterm birth. If you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant or breastfeeding, the FDA suggests asking your health care provider about caffeine.
- Caffeine's half-life averages about 5 hours in adults and can be much longer in some people, so an afternoon pill can still affect sleep.
- Avoid pure powdered caffeine. The FDA warns that one teaspoon can hold as much caffeine as about 28 cups of coffee.
People with heart conditions, anxiety disorders or high blood pressure, and anyone on medications that interact with caffeine, should ask a doctor before using caffeine pills. Keep them away from children.
Caffeine with L-theanine
Pairing caffeine with L-theanine is popular for smoother focus. A 2014 meta-analysis of 11 small placebo-controlled studies found moderate short-term improvements in alertness and attention task accuracy in the first 2 hours after the combination, with caffeine dose appearing to matter more than theanine dose. Combo pills cost more per 200 mg of caffeine than plain pills, so they are priced on their own tab:
| Product | Store | Per 200 mg |
|---|---|---|
| Nutricost Caffeine + L-Theanine Capsules · 240 Capsules | Nutricost | $0.13 |
| Vitamatic Caffeine & L-Theanine · 120 Tablets | Vitacost | $0.28 |

Frequently asked questions
What are the best caffeine pills in 2026?
Plain 100 mg or 200 mg caffeine tablets or capsules at the lowest price per 200 mg. The picks above are ranked from today's prices.
Are generic caffeine pills as good as Vivarin?
Yes, for the caffeine itself. The molecule is identical, and generic pills usually cost much less per 200 mg.
How many caffeine pills can I take a day?
The FDA cites 400 mg a day from all sources as an amount not generally associated with negative effects for most healthy adults. That includes coffee, tea, soda and energy drinks, and less is wiser if you are pregnant or sensitive.
Should I take 100 mg or 200 mg?
Start with 100 mg if you are sensitive or new to caffeine pills. 200 mg is about two 8 oz cups of brewed coffee at once.
How long before bed should I stop taking caffeine?
At least 6 hours, and longer if you sleep poorly. In one study, 400 mg taken 6 hours before bed still reduced sleep by more than an hour.
