Is collagen worth it? What studies show and what 10 g really costs
· 3 min read · By Value Servings
Collagen splits people into two camps: those who say it is a waste of money, and those who swear their nails and knees changed after a couple of months. The research sits closer to the skeptics than the ads suggest, but it is not a clean zero.
What the studies say
Skin. Dozens of randomized trials, most of them small and many paid for by collagen makers, report improvements in skin hydration, elasticity or wrinkles after 8–12 weeks. In 2025, a meta-analysis in The American Journal of Medicine pooled 23 trials with about 1,500 people. Taken together, the trials showed benefits. But when the authors separated studies by funding, the benefits appeared only in industry-funded studies. Studies without industry funding, and the highest-quality studies, found no significant effect. Industry groups responded that funding does not by itself make a study worse.
Joints. Some trials of specific collagen products reported less activity-related joint pain. The evidence is limited and mixed.
Muscle. Collagen is an incomplete protein. It lacks tryptophan and is low in leucine, the amino acid most tied to muscle building. Do not count collagen toward a protein target for muscle the way you would whey. See whey isolate vs concentrate for a better protein per dollar.
Branded peptides vs generic collagen
Some collagen products use trademarked peptides that were tested in their own trials, at specific doses:
| Ingredient | Maker | Dose used in its trials | Marketed for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Verisol | Gelita | 2.5 g a day | Skin |
| Fortigel | Gelita | 5 g a day | Joints |
| Peptan | Rousselot | often 5–10 g a day | Skin, joints |
| Generic hydrolyzed collagen | Many | usually 10–20 g a day | General |
If you want the result from a branded ingredient's study, buy that ingredient at that dose. Generic collagen peptides are not proven to be the same. But branded peptide products often cost several times more per gram, and the same funding caveat applies to their studies.
Marine vs bovine
Bovine (cow) collagen is mostly type I and III. Marine (fish) collagen is mostly type I. There is no good evidence that one works better for skin. Marine collagen usually costs more. Pick based on diet, allergies and price.

The best-known brand in the US, Vital Proteins, is majority-owned by Nestlé Health Science. Some buyers avoid it for that reason; others buy it because it is at every grocery store and Costco. Either way, it is plain hydrolyzed collagen, and the list shows what the same 10 g costs from other brands.
Gummies and shots
Collagen gummies often hold 1–2 g per serving. Reaching the 10 g used in many studies would take a handful. Beauty shots can cost several dollars a day for a few grams. If you take collagen, powder is the only form where the dose and the price make sense.
Frequently asked questions
Does collagen actually work?
Evidence is mixed. Industry-funded trials often show skin benefits, but a 2025 meta-analysis found no significant effect in studies without industry funding or in the highest-quality studies.
How long does collagen take to work?
Studies typically ran 8–12 weeks. If you notice nothing after about three months, it is reasonable to stop.
Is Vital Proteins worth the price?
It is a standard hydrolyzed collagen. Other brands sell the same type of product for less per 10 g; compare on our list.
Can collagen replace protein powder?
No. Collagen lacks tryptophan and is low in leucine, so it does not support muscle building like whey or other complete proteins.
Is marine collagen better than bovine?
There is no good evidence that it works better. It usually costs more.
