Fish oil guide
Best fish oil in 2026: top 5 picks by cost per gram of EPA + DHA
The five best-value fish oils right now, ranked by what you pay per gram of EPA + DHA rather than per softgel, including the cheapest IFOS-tested bottle.
"Best fish oil" lists usually compare bottles. That hides the only number that matters for value: how much EPA and DHA you get for your money. Two bottles of "1,000 mg" softgels can differ three-fold in omega-3 content.
This list ranks fish oil the way our fish oil price comparison does: price per 1 g of EPA + DHA, from each store's own label.

How these picks are chosen
A bottle goes on the list only when its store page states EPA and DHA per serving. We divide the price by the total EPA + DHA in the bottle. Fish oil and algae oil are kept on separate tabs because they are different sources.
- Best value: lowest price per gram of EPA + DHA today.
- Best third-party tested: the cheapest bottle whose store page names IFOS or another testing program.
- Lowest upfront cost: the cheapest bottle to buy.
- Runner-ups: the next lowest prices per gram.
Only bottles that cost less per gram than the popular drugstore brand we compare against qualify. See how it works.
What to check on a fish oil label
- EPA and DHA per serving. Add them. That is your dose. "Fish oil 1,000 mg" is the oil weight.
- Softgels per serving. Many concentrates list two softgels as a serving.
- Freshness signals. A best-by date well in the future, and ideally a third-party freshness test. IFOS publishes oxidation, contaminant and content results by lot.
- Form. Triglyceride (TG or rTG) or ethyl ester (EE). Some studies show better absorption for triglyceride forms, but the gap narrows when taken with a meal containing fat. Price per gram is the bigger lever for most people.

How much EPA + DHA do people take?
For general health, organizations commonly point to about 250–500 mg a day of EPA + DHA, roughly what eating fatty fish twice a week provides. Higher doses are used for specific conditions under a doctor's care. The FDA has said up to 5 g a day from supplements is not expected to cause safety problems, but trials have linked doses above 1 g a day with a higher risk of atrial fibrillation. More in how much EPA and DHA per day.
If you don't eat fish
Algae oil provides DHA and sometimes EPA without fish. It usually costs more per gram. Today's algae prices:
| Product | Store | Per 1 g EPA+DHA |
|---|---|---|
| Dr. Tobias Vegan Omega 3 Algae Oil | Dr. Tobias | $0.85 |

Frequently asked questions
What is the best fish oil supplement in 2026?
For value, the bottle with the lowest price per gram of EPA + DHA from a brand you trust, ideally with a freshness test such as IFOS. The picks above are ranked from today's prices.
Is triple-strength fish oil worth it?
Often yes for value: concentrated softgels hold more EPA + DHA each, so you swallow fewer and frequently pay less per gram.
Why do cheap fish oil capsules have so little omega-3?
Standard fish oil is about 30% EPA + DHA. Concentrates are processed to raise that share, which costs more per softgel but can cost less per gram of omega-3.
Does fish oil go bad?
Yes. Omega-3s oxidize. Store bottles cool and closed, use them before the date, and discard oil that smells strongly fishy or sour.
