Creatine HCl vs monohydrate: is HCl worth the price?

· 3 min read · By Value Servings

HCl is the most common "upgrade" pitched to people who already take monohydrate. The marketing says you need a smaller dose, it will not bloat you, and it absorbs better. Here is what holds up.

What HCl is

Creatine HCl is creatine bound to hydrochloric acid. It is much more soluble in water than monohydrate, so it disappears into a glass instead of settling at the bottom.

By weight, creatine monohydrate is about 88% creatine. Creatine HCl is about 78% creatine. So a gram of HCl powder actually holds a little less creatine than a gram of monohydrate.

The claims, checked

ClaimWhat the evidence says
Absorbs betterMonohydrate is already absorbed almost completely in the gut, so there is little room to improve.
You need a smaller doseNot shown. Studies that found benefits used 3–5 g a day of monohydrate. There are no trials showing 1–2 g of HCl matches that.
No bloatingBloating mostly comes from large loading doses. Skipping loading or splitting doses helps with monohydrate too.
Better resultsNo published trials show better strength or muscle gains with HCl at equal creatine.

A 2021 review by researchers from the International Society of Sports Nutrition looked at alternative forms, HCl included, and concluded that none had been shown to beat monohydrate.

The price difference

HCl is usually sold in small tubs and capsules at a much higher price per gram. If you take the same amount of creatine, HCl commonly costs three to seven times more per serving. If you take the small dose on the label, you are paying for a dose that has not been tested.

Our list keeps HCl on its own tab and never ranks it against monohydrate, because it is a different form. Monohydrate prices today:

If monohydrate bothers your stomach

  • Skip the loading phase and take 3–5 g once a day.
  • Split it into two smaller doses.
  • Dissolve it in warm water or a warm drink first. Undissolved powder sitting in the gut is a common cause of cramps.
  • Try a micronized monohydrate, which mixes more easily.

Only after those would HCl be worth trying, and then as a comfort choice, not a stronger one.

Frequently asked questions

Is creatine HCl better than monohydrate?

There is no good evidence that it is. It dissolves better, but monohydrate is already well absorbed, and the research on benefits uses monohydrate.

How much creatine HCl equals 5 g of monohydrate?

By creatine content, about 5.6 g of HCl gives the same creatine as 5 g of monohydrate. Labels that suggest 1–2 g a day are recommending a dose that has not been tested against monohydrate.

Does creatine HCl cause less bloating?

It may feel lighter because it dissolves fully, but most bloating complaints come from loading doses. Monohydrate without loading usually solves it.
